The Artadia Awards 2013 Los Angeles Awardees are: Cayetano Ferrer,  Nicole Miller, Vishal Jugdeo, Stanya Kahn and Kerry Tribe.

For two consecutive days (November 11-12, 2013), three internationally known jurors: Ali Subotnick, Curator, The Hammer Museum, University of Los Angeles, California; Magnolia de la Garza, Associate Curator, Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City; and Joao Ribas, most recently of MIT’s List Visual Art Center–conducted 45-minute studio visits with each of the 10 short-listed artists. The Finalists were chosen from over 500 visual art applicants living and working in the Los Angeles County.

The two recipients of the 2013 Artadia Los Angeles Awards at the $15,000 level are: Cayetano Ferrer and Nicole Miller. The three recipients of the $3,000 awards are: Vishal Jugdeo, Stanya Kahn and Kerry Tribe.

This is Artadia’s first award cycle in Los Angeles. Since 1998, Artadia has recognized artistic excellence is cities across the United States with unrestricted, merit-based awards to contemporary artists chosen through a rigorous jury process involving a panel of internationally recognized curators. In addition to Los Angeles, Artadia currently funds awards on a rotating cycle in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco.

Artadia Founder and President Christopher E. Vroom said of Artadia’s expansion to Los Angeles, “Artadia is building a national network of direct support for artists. We are so thrilled to be a part of the cultural community in Los Angeles. The diversity and range of artistic practice, outstanding schools, non-profits and cultural institutions make this city one of the most exciting in the world of contemporary art.”

Juror Ali Subotnick, said of Artadia’s Award program, “There are very few opportunities for artists in L.A. to receive unrestricted grants like this and in a city with such a thriving and ever-increasing community of artists the impact will be deeply felt.”
Applications for the Artadia Awards were open to visual artists in all media and at any stage of their career working and living in the Los Angeles County area. The application was available online for three months from July 1 to September 30, 2013. The three jurors: Ali Subotnick; Chus Martinez, Chief Curator of El Museo del Barrio, New York; and Spencer Finch, Artist, New York–named the ten Finalists in New York in October.

For the second part of Artadia’s unique jurying process, two curators joined Ali Subotnick in Los Angeles to see the work in person and meet with the ten Finalists. Juror Magnolia de la Garza said of the process, “Being part of Artadia’s jurygave me the opportunity to see a very diverse spectrum of artistic production in Los Angeles. I think the ten finalists have much to offer and it was difficult to have to decide five winners. Artadia represents a great opportunity, not only to those who receive the award, but to everyone involved in the process.

Artadia will present an exhibition of the winning artists work in Los Angeles in January 2014.

To honor the generous gifts of the Artadia Los Angeles Council, Cayetano Ferrer and Kerry Tribe were named Los Angeles Council Awardees.
