Shaun O’Dell’s paintings, created by mounting acrylic and gouache painted paper on canvas, critically contemplate the relationship between mythology, the American psyche and the natural world. O’Dell creates with an intuitive and impulsive manner, adding a psychological dimension to his work. He nearly denies pattern, with no logical progression or idea of what is beyond the canvas, giving the viewer a longing for more of his dynamic, mysterious work.

Shaun O’Dell, born in Texas, now lives and works in San Francisco. He is a graduate of Stanford University’s MFA Program. O’Dell has had solo exhibitions at Susan Inglett Gallery, NYC; Gallery 16, San Francisco; Jack Hanley Gallery, NYC and Los Angeles; Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton, NY; Inman Gallery, Houston; and James Harris Gallery, Seattle; amongst others. His work has been included in exhibitions at Berkeley Art Museum, CA; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; The A Foundation, Liverpool; CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, San Francisco; San Francisco Art Institute; White Box, NYC; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, among many. His work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NYC; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC; and the de Young Museum, San Francisco.
